I have looked at the build it yourself section of Donnie Savage's Home
Page, but was wondering it any one could help me in building it. I need
to find out where I can obtain the chip to start the construction
process.

Check with BG Micro (http://www.bgmicro.com). They have the MAX232
for $1.65 in addition to many other parts. You could also check with
Jamico or Mossers or any other company that sells chips (maybe even
your local TV part supply house). The MAX232 chip is a fairly common
chip.
